At the green building center we have a wide selection of natural floor coverings from renewable materials like bamboo and cork to recycled flooring that is reclaimed from commercial and industrial buildings scheduled for demolition. There are companies that collect natural wine corks and then turn them into anything from shoes and bags to flooring. This is not the case for cork.
For natural cork you ll need to recycle them elsewhere. Cork is a natural and biodegradable material made from the bark of cork oak trees. Furthermore its resilience means that cork flooring itself can be recycled. Or you can do what i do and put your natural corks in your compost bin.
Synthetic corks and screwcaps can go straight into the recycling bin. However we checked with our friends at planet ark and unfortunately at the moment there are no organisations accepting corks for recycling in australia. When a consumer needs to change flooring in a room many other flooring materials are damaged to the point of being unusable. All of these materials offer a beautiful look with minimal impact on the environment.
